Men ser man på såvel nationale som internationale museers webkommunikation, er det næsten umuligt at finde den konversationelle interaktionsform, hvor både indhold og distributionen er styret af brugerne. Dette hænger måske sammen med, at museerne er vant til at være autoritative institutioner med ansvar for varetagelsen og formidlingen af kulturarven – og hvordan kan sådanne opgaver lægges ud til museernes brugere på et åbent web, hvor alt kan blive genbrugt i andre sammenhænge? Brooklyn Museum17 har i flere tilfælde netop forsøgt dette ved at overdrage museets vante ekspertrolle til brugerne. Museet opfatter Web 2.0 som en oplagt mulighed for at skabe sociale relationer med og mellem brugerne og til at facilitere interaktive og lærerige oplevelser.

Som museets Interpretive Materials Manager og Manager of Information Systems forklarer, er museets formål med anvendelsen af Web 2.0 følgende “… to utilize Web 2.0 sites and services not only to reach out to our young audience demographic, but also to provide interactive learning tools and relevant forms of interpretation” (Caruth & Bernstein, 2007, p.1). Museet er nærmest blevet et state of the art “museum 2.0” på grund af dets konsekvente inddragelse af Web 2.0 – dette ses både i deres tilstedeværelse på de mest populære Web 2.0-sites og i selve Web 2.0 kulturen, som de har inddraget i deres mission og i al deres formidling og kommunikation også i det fysiske museum: “We employed Web 2.0 to support the Museum’s community-oriented and visitor-friendly mission, fostering the general public’s interaction and dialogue with the institution” (Ibid.). I forlængelse heraf har museet også udviklet deres egen Facebook-inspirerede netværk på museets eget website; en såkaldt ’posse’, som giver brugerne mulighed for at interagere med museet omkring fælles interesser vedrørende museets samling.
